Interior Materials Guide: Plywood, HDHMR, MDF — Which to Choose?
Confused about plywood grades, HDHMR, MDF, and particle board? This guide explains which material to use where — for kitchens, wardrobes, and furniture in Jaipur homes.
When you're getting a modular kitchen or wardrobe made in Jaipur, your designer will ask you to choose between plywood, HDHMR, MDF, and particle board. These aren't just technical terms — they determine how long your furniture lasts and how much maintenance it needs.
Here's a plain-language guide to each material and when to use it.
Plywood
Plywood is made from thin layers (veneers) of wood glued together with alternating grain directions. This cross-grain structure makes it strong, stable, and resistant to warping.
Grades you'll encounter:
- MR (Moisture Resistant): Standard grade. Fine for furniture in dry conditions. Not suitable for kitchens or bathrooms.
- BWR (Boiling Water Resistant): Suitable for moderate moisture. Used for wardrobes.
- BWP (Boiling Water Proof): Marine grade. Used for kitchen carcasses. Submerge in boiling water for hours — it won't delaminate.
Good brands in Jaipur: Greenply, Century, Kitply, Duro
Best used for: Kitchen carcasses (BWP), wardrobe carcasses (BWR), structural elements
Price range: ₹70–150/sq ft depending on grade and thickness
HDHMR (High Density High Moisture Resistant)
HDHMR is an engineered wood panel made from wood fibres compressed under high pressure with moisture-resistant resin. It's heavier and denser than standard MDF, with superior screw-holding capacity and moisture resistance.
HDHMR has become popular as a plywood alternative for modular furniture because:
- More uniform than plywood (no knots, no core gaps)
- Better screw-holding than MDF
- More moisture-resistant than standard MDF
- Flatter surface, so laminates look cleaner
Best used for: Modular kitchen carcasses, wardrobe carcasses (as alternative to plywood)
Price range: ₹80–120/sq ft
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)
MDF is also engineered from wood fibres, but at lower pressure than HDHMR. It's smooth, uniform, and excellent for paint or intricate routing — but it absorbs moisture easily and doesn't hold screws well at edges.
Best used for: Shutter panels (not carcasses), painted doors, decorative elements, TV unit panels
What to avoid: Never use standard MDF for kitchen carcasses or in damp areas. Edges swell on contact with water.
Price range: ₹50–80/sq ft
Particle Board (Chip Board)
Particle board is the least expensive engineered wood — made from wood chips and sawdust compressed with adhesive. It's heavy, has poor screw-holding, and absorbs moisture readily.
Particle board is widely used by budget furniture manufacturers and is often the material in "ready-made" furniture from large retailers.
Best used for: Low-cost furniture where durability is not critical
What to avoid: Kitchen carcasses, bathrooms, high-humidity areas
Our Recommendation for Jaipur
| Application | Recommended Material |
| Kitchen carcass | BWP plywood or HDHMR |
| Wardrobe carcass | BWR plywood or HDHMR |
| Kitchen shutters | Laminate-finish MDF or plywood |
| TV unit | MDF with veneer or laminate |
| Bedroom furniture | MR plywood or HDHMR |
Jaipur's climate is dry most of the year but humid during monsoon. BWP plywood or HDHMR for kitchens is essential. For wardrobes, BWR plywood is sufficient.
