The Most Important Vastu Rule: Direction

The ideal kitchen direction in Vastu is south-east (Agneya corner). This is the corner of fire, and the cooking platform should face this direction so the cook faces east while cooking.

If south-east is not possible, north-west (Vayavya) is the second-best option.

Avoid: North-east (sacred Ishanya corner) and south-west (master bedroom zone).

Where to Place the Stove/Hob

The stove or gas hob should be placed on the east or south-east wall. The cook should face east while cooking — this is the single most important Vastu principle for the kitchen.

In modular kitchens, this typically means the hob is on the platform against the east wall, with the cook's back towards the west.

Sink Placement

The sink should be on the north or east side of the kitchen. Avoid placing the sink directly next to the stove — keep at least 1.5 feet of countertop between them.

The sink represents water; the stove represents fire. Vastu says these elements should not be directly adjacent.

Refrigerator Placement

The refrigerator can be placed in the south-west, west, or north-west corner of the kitchen. Avoid placing it in the north-east corner.

Storage and Overhead Cabinets

Heavy storage (floor-to-ceiling pantry units) should be on the south or west wall. Overhead cabinets on the east or north walls are fine.

What to Avoid in Kitchen Vastu

• Black colour on the cooking platform wall: Black is inauspicious for the Agni (fire) zone.
• Kitchen below a staircase or above a toilet: Always avoid this.
• Toilet sharing a wall with the cooking platform: The stove should never share a wall with a toilet.
• Pooja room adjacent to the kitchen: Keep these spaces separate.
